Pipeline operators are moving beyond periodic integrity assessments toward Pipeline Integrity Intelligence, an integrated approach that combines inspection data, hydraulic modelling, SCADA, GIS, maintenance records and artificial intelligence.
Traditional pipeline integrity management relies heavily on scheduled inspections, anomaly assessments, repairs and subsequent inspection campaigns. While these processes remain essential, modern pipelines generate large volumes of operational data that can provide a more continuous view of asset condition.
A digital pipeline model can bring together historical in-line inspection (ILI) results, engineering records, pipeline geometry, operating limits, maintenance history and physical asset locations. This allows operators to compare inspection findings with operational changes and identify trends such as corrosion growth and recurring anomalies.
Hydraulic simulation can further strengthen this approach by providing estimates of pressure, flow, velocity and line pack along the pipeline. When connected to live SCADA measurements, operators can compare predicted and actual operating behaviour and identify abnormal conditions more quickly.
The technology can also support pigging and leak detection operations. Engineers can simulate pig velocities, differential pressures and operating conditions before a pig is launched, while live pressure and flow data can help estimate pig position and identify unexpected changes during the operation.
AI adds another layer by helping operators interpret large volumes of engineering and operational information. By combining AI with historical inspection records and real-time pipeline data, operators can investigate changes, assess potential risks and access relevant information more efficiently.
The approach is particularly relevant to brownfield pipeline assets, where decades of inspection reports, drawings, databases and operational records may need to be integrated with existing infrastructure rather than replaced.
The move toward Pipeline Integrity Intelligence reflects the wider digitalisation of the oil and gas industry, with operators seeking continuous visibility of asset condition, improved risk management and more proactive maintenance decisions.
