Advanced subsea robotics originally developed for offshore oil and gas operations are finding new applications in protecting critical offshore energy infrastructure, reflecting the growing importance of autonomous technologies in safeguarding strategic energy assets.

Scottish offshore robotics specialist Rovtech Solutions has entered into a strategic collaboration with Australian maritime services company Franmarine to expand the deployment of its VALOR remotely operated vehicle (ROV) platform into maritime security and subsea infrastructure protection.

The agreement was announced during the Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference in Perth, where the VALOR system was showcased with an integrated mine countermeasure configuration designed for complex underwater operations.

Originally engineered to support offshore oil and gas inspection, maintenance and intervention activities, the modular ROV platform is now being adapted for additional roles including underwater surveillance, subsea asset inspection, mine countermeasure operations and the protection of critical offshore infrastructure.

The system can be deployed from both conventional vessels and unmanned surface vessels, enabling operators to carry out remote inspections and intervention tasks while reducing personnel exposure in hazardous offshore environments.

According to Rovtech Solutions CEO John Polson, the technology was initially developed to address the demanding operational requirements of the offshore energy sector, with its proven capabilities now creating opportunities in broader maritime applications.

For Africa and the Middle East, where offshore oil and gas developments continue to expand in regions such as Namibia, Angola, Nigeria, Egypt, Mozambique, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, technologies that improve the inspection, monitoring and protection of subsea infrastructure are becoming increasingly important. Offshore platforms, pipelines, subsea production systems and export facilities require continuous monitoring to maintain operational integrity, minimise downtime and enhance asset security.

The partnership also reflects growing global investment in autonomous subsea systems as governments and energy operators seek more efficient methods of protecting offshore installations, communications networks and critical energy infrastructure from emerging security threats.

As digitalisation and automation continue transforming offshore operations, remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles are expected to play an increasingly important role in asset integrity management, predictive maintenance and the safe operation of offshore oil and gas facilities.
