Brazil’s offshore oil and gas sector is moving towards greater standardisation and interoperability across subsea systems, creating a growing need for continuous visibility into asset condition and performance.

Petrobras is evolving its subsea engineering strategy to simplify procurement, reduce technical barriers and improve alignment with international standards. The shift is expected to support more connected and scalable offshore developments while changing how operators approach subsea integrity management.

Standardisation increases the need for integrity visibility

Historically, many offshore developments have relied on highly customised engineering and isolated subsea systems. Greater standardisation can help reduce project complexity, improve equipment compatibility and support more consistent project delivery.

However, increased connectivity between subsea systems can also create greater operational dependencies.

Integrity issues affecting one component can potentially have consequences across connected infrastructure, including umbilicals, flowlines, subsea equipment and FPSO integration.

As a result, operators increasingly require better visibility into the condition and performance of offshore assets throughout their operating life.

Operational intelligence supports offshore reliability

Greater subsea predictability depends not only on standardised engineering but also on the ability to monitor asset performance over time.

Earlier visibility of degradation and changing operating conditions can help operators make more informed maintenance and intervention decisions. This is particularly important in deepwater environments, where offshore intervention activities can be complex and costly.

The move towards continuous operational intelligence is also changing traditional approaches to integrity management. Rather than relying primarily on reactive inspections, operators are increasingly looking at condition-based and data-driven approaches to identify potential problems earlier.

According to McKinsey & Company, predictive and condition-based maintenance programmes can reduce unplanned downtime in oil and gas operations by up to 20–30%.

Brazil highlights changing offshore requirements

Brazil’s continued development of deepwater oil and gas resources is increasing the integration between wells, subsea infrastructure and FPSO operations.

The evolution of Petrobras’ subsea strategy reflects a broader industry trend towards more industrialised and interconnected offshore developments.

For operators, greater interoperability can provide benefits in engineering, procurement and project delivery, but maintaining reliable operations will depend increasingly on effective subsea integrity monitoring, asset visibility and operational data.

The trend is also relevant to offshore oil and gas developments across Africa and the Middle East, where deepwater projects and complex subsea infrastructure continue to drive demand for technologies that improve asset reliability, operational performance and lifecycle management.
