A system-wide approach to solids control can significantly improve drilling efficiency, reduce operational costs and enhance well performance, according to Othman Soliman, founder of SC DrillTech.

Rather than evaluating individual pieces of equipment separately, Soliman argues that solids control should be managed as an integrated processing system in which each component works together to optimise drilling fluid quality and overall well construction performance.

Traditional performance assessments often focus on individual equipment such as shale shakers, hydrocyclones or centrifuges. While these units may operate within their design specifications, drilling fluids can still become contaminated with fine solids, leading to increased dilution, higher operating costs and non-productive time (NPT).

According to Soliman, effective solids control depends on maintaining the correct balance between fluid processing volume, solids loading throughout the treatment process and adequate retention time within the surface system. When one stage of the solids control process underperforms, it places additional pressure on downstream equipment, reducing overall system efficiency.

For example, excessive flow rates through shale shakers may allow fine solids to bypass screening equipment, while ineffective removal of coarse particles can reduce hydrocyclone performance and increase wear on centrifuges.

By adopting a system-based approach, drilling operators can improve drilling fluid quality, extend equipment life, minimise waste, reduce maintenance requirements and enhance overall drilling performance.

As drilling projects become increasingly complex, integrated solids control strategies are expected to play a growing role in improving operational reliability and lowering well construction costs.
